Lawn Care Tips
Mow Grass High: Grass should be cut at 3 inches during the season. Tall grass will require less water and keep out weeds and crabgrass. Tall grass helps shade the ground lowering the soil temperature so the lawn will need less water and help keep out weeds and crabgrass. Taller grass puts out deeper root systems, which help the lawn during periods of heat and drought.
Use Sharp Blades: A sharp blade will cut the lawn while a dull balde tears at the grass plant. Dull blades produce that white hazy look to the lawn and by tearing the plant allows fungus to enter the plant.
Proper Watering: Watering should be done in the early hours of the morning before the sun has a chance to evaporate it. A healthy lawn lawn will require about one inch of water per week, whether it comes in the form or rain or from an irrigation system. Over watering produces soil compaction which leads to shallow roots, fungus problems, and crabgrass outbreaks. During the summer you should water every other day to allow the surface to dry out and force the roots system down to find the water. Only during times of extreme heat should daily watering be required.
Fall Leaves: Try to keep leaves from piling up on the lawn during the fall. Too many leaves can smother the grass at a time when it is trying to repair itself from the summer and prepare for the winter.
